Case Study Senegence
Founded in 1999, SeneGence is a makeup and cosmetic manufacturer, most commonly known for their product LipSense. From 2016 to 2018, Senegence was going through a high growth phase; the number of SeneGence distributors skyrocketed from 50,000 to 500,000—a growth rate of 10 times their distributors in two years.
Senegence’s legacy distributor platform/portal could not keep up with the increased workload that came with thousands of new distributors logging onto the same, malfunctioning web application. They needed the right tools to integrate a new system with what they had on the backend and help their distributors sell more products and thrive in their business.
Giving Senegence a Software Makeover
Senegence needed a complete overhaul of both code and design. They came to Kahoa looking for a guide that would help them overcome their mountain; they had a slow and ineffective website that left distributors frustrated and desperate to better manage their sales. While their distributors were struggling, SeneGence was also expanding into new global markets; the redesigned platform had to be available in the US and internationally as well.
These two problems put a lot of stress on Senegence stakeholders to provide what seemed like unattainable solutions in a timely manner. The Kahoa team knew that finding the right solution the first time around was important to save the company both time and money as the project progressed.
Our team started this project with research and testing. Kahoa designers and developers performed user testing by interviewing distributors about their current frustrations and their features wishlist for the update. Their feedback was invaluable as we shaped and discovered the right solution to address SeneGence’s pain points.
The Kahoa team knew that the longer that distributor platforms were non-functional, the more money it cost them. We prioritized quickly rebuilding the distributors’ business management system. Our team performed quality assurance, manual/automated, and beta user testing to cover every stage of the SeneGence distributor journey from contact to final sale.
The end product was a hyper-focused and engaging dashboard that showed distributors the most relevant data first. The clean navigation and modern design made it not just functional, but enjoyable and approachable for any experience level.

Climbing The Mountain
Just as we were planning the beta release, SeneGence reported significant and unexpected growth during development. Our team modified the new system to handle even more concurrent users and quickly simulated thousands of additional users with innovative load-testing tools. The results helped pinpoint areas in the code that needed to be adjusted to scale the servers during high traffic and improve load times.
As soon as the distributor management tool reached the quality level we needed, it was time to tackle the sales site. The sales platform was so outdated and dysfunctional that many distributors abandoned it completely. They opted instead to create their own website to host and sell their products.
The platform needed to increase sales, but the Kahoa team knew they also needed to create a system that convinced distributors to come back and actually use the improved platform. This is where those distributor feature wishlists came in handy. We took into account what they wanted and added our own knowledge and best practices to create software SeneGence distributors didn’t even know they needed.
The Kahoa team involved clients and users into the development process by engaging with them and listening to them. Because of the work that we did with SeneGence, they now have the tools and infrastructure to handle increasing growth—even if they gain another half million distributors.
