Case Study BYU Pathway
The BYU-Pathways Worldwide program is a faith-based online learning resource that provides students with certifications and course offerings to empower them to continue learning, continue growing, and gain career-enhancing skills while working toward a full degree.
Pathways has a big, strategic vision to change the face of education. They know that there isn’t one right way to get an education and that often test scores, environments, and accessibility keep learners from getting the education they need to monetize their skills.
They wanted a new platform to support their vision; one that provided essential student services for higher education while not feeling too similar to the traditional education route that is inaccessible for many students.
Discovery & Usability
A large-scale assessment tool to guide current and prospective students in identifying which certifications align with their education and career goals
A partner who would guide their team through difficult problem solving
Because of Kahoa’s experience building learning management systems, payment portals, and student-centered platforms, Pathways knew that our team would better address user and accessibility needs than any other strategic software company. And for Pathways, every project milestone needed to focus on creating a comprehensive student experience.
Kahoa gathered the Pathways team for a 4-day intensive discovery workshop called a SolutionMap. The large size of the Pathways SolutionMap presented its own challenge as multiple decision makers in this goal-oriented process meant more opinions. During the SolutionMap, Pathways and Kahoa designed the assessment tool through consistent and effective collaboration.
Students are always a high priority at Pathways, and so the Kahoa team conducted extensive user testing to discover how students interacted with the legacy system as well as tested design mock-ups generated after the SolutionMap. That information was then compiled into user stories which helped architects make important decisions when they started development.

The Worldwide Pathway to Success
The Pathways assessment tool needed to integrate with third-party systems; students would not only receive the results of their skills assessment, but would be directed to a degree offered by a partnered university that is the best match for their skills. We integrated course catalogs and degree structures from third parties to set students on the right path so they can access a quality education.
The Kahoa team made sure to train Pathways employees to manage the tool because the maintenance for this assessment would be important for its longevity. We created the assessment with the expectation that it would be updated with new certifications and adapted to integrate with even more universities in the future.
The end product is called Pathway Connect and it does what it says quite literally: it connects students to the path that will work for them. It guides them through receiving certifications and, eventually, a four-year degree. Working with Kahoa allowed the Pathways team to be creative and actively contribute to the product result. Stakeholders were pleased with the assessment in the end and it proved, over and over, to be a vital part of a Pathways student experience.
